Dr. Jean M. DiPirro
President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching
Jean DiPirro, associate professor of psychology, is dedicated both to her students and to her research. She makes extraordinary efforts to provide her students with all the skills necessary to conduct scientific research projects, including critical thinking skills and research methodology. Her success is demonstrated by the many students who conducted research under her supervision and have since matriculated into graduate school. She has also received grants totaling over $1.5 million to support research projects that have led to numerous publications and presentations as well as opportunities to mentor undergraduate students. She embodies the ideal of the “teaching scholar.”
DiPirro’s dedication to her students is evident in her innovative classroom teaching methods, and her success as a teacher is reflected in extraordinary student course evaluations. It is not unusual for 100 percent of her students to rate her as good or excellent in teaching effectiveness. Many students choose her as their adviser. She also has served as faculty adviser for the Psychology Club and Psychology Students Interested in Community Outreach, which she established. She has also actively participated in the McNair Scholars Program as mentor and advocate.
